A leakage shuts down Talvivaara

Talvivaara Mining Company Plc (OMXH: TLV1V, LON: TALV) is down on yet another environmental concern. The company said a leakage at the gypsum pond has led to a temporary suspension of metals production with an estimated restart on Wednesday. The mining firm earlier said that the levees are intact but that water is filtering from the east side. The root cause and the amount of leakage are still under investigation. The company is trying to ensure that waste water does not get into water system.

***UPDATE TUESDAY MORNING***

Couple days in and the situation is still not under control. The exact location of the leak hasn’t been established and the estimate of the amount of waste water that is leaking has climbed. While most of the leakage is led to areas where Talvivaara maintains control over it, some is reportedly makings its way into the wilderness. It seems officials are starting to lose their patience and the rhetoric appears to be harshening across the political spectrum.

***UPDATE FRIDAY 9.11.2012***

Despite some limited success in repair works, problems stemming mainly from safety omissions in the beginning phase of the mine continue to hamper success. The wider public is now starting to worry. Thousands of people have signed a petition to close the mine and people in the nearby regions are calling their local water suppliers in panic. Environmental Minister Ville Niinistö from the Green League has blamed his predecessors. The army has been ordered to help in the efforts. The company and local officials are trying to preach calm, saying there is no danger to people in sight.
